ACES Fall in Familiar Fashion

The Melick FLYING ACES of Flemington were eliminated from the AIAHL Federal C Finals by WHACK-A-MOLE in a two game sweep. The ACES battled, but could not grab a win from the very team that swept them in last season's finals too. The WHACKS will also be appearing in the Iron B Finals against the HITMEN after downing the BUZZARDS in the B semis. League Commissioner, Bill Auld, officially bumped WHACK-A-MOLE up to the Iron B league (for next season play) at the Captains meeting, Wednesday night in Whitehouse Station.

The FLYING ACES were unable to come to terms with winger, 'Juvy' Lou Johnson, for season 7. "This is a huge loss." said alternate captain Ryan Bleck. " Juvy Lou was a big part of our team. He will be missed and we hope he will skate with the ACES again someday". So far Johnson is the only ACE not to resign.

THE GAME BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Twas the game before Christmas, the ACES were high.

Some parking lot pregame and then time to fly.

C. Jones came early, he was waiting with 'G'.

Lovering took the Euro with Donny and me.

Our banter was witty, Donny pulled out 'the case'.

Then out walked Smitty, a smile on his face.

"These HITMEN are nasty.  Their league, Iron B.

11 - 5 they beat us, before that 9 to 3.

So tonight just play hockey," is what Smitty said.

"Have fun with this free ice.  Then home and to bed."

We next moved the pregame to locker room 4.

Some beer and some Twisted T, and perhaps a bit more.

Through the door entered Weaver, with his bag and his sticks.

Followed by Turner and Nick Minarik.

But with 'Juvy' on IR, and Stockwell a scratch.

D. Jones in the city, they'd all miss the match.

And out so was Petersen and Marcolini too.

And Kusznier with a question mark, but Ryan Warn came through.

So with 6 ACES missing it was quite plain to see

We'd have 2 lines of offense and 3 guys on D.

The HITMEN started hitting , the ACES scratched and scraped.

We had a great time playing, season 6's final game.

Midway through the second, we were in a hole.

But we gave all we could give them and Turner scored 2 goals.

And when I moved to offense, I was by no means great.

But when it came to faceoffs, I won 6 of 8.

Great season ACES! Happy holidays!

Smith Drives ACES Past CBK for Conference Title

The Melick FLYING ACES of Flemington are making the most of OT hockey this post season. And Kevin Smith is a huge part of the action. Trailing the COMEBACK KIDS 2-0 in the 2nd period of Sunday nights contest, the ACES' first line center scored the first of his two goals and let CBK know the ACES weren't done yet. Then Smith tied the game early in the third period with his second of the night (his fourth of the post season). And from that point on both goalies played lights out hockey, stopping all shots for the remainder of regulation play. And with 46 seconds left in the first OT, Smith struck again. This time with a perfect assist to line-mate Ryan Warn who blasted the puck home for the game winner. Warn took home the First Star Honor for his late game goal. Smith and 'The Brick' were obviously in the running. Nick Minarik gave up only one even strength goal Sunday night. The other goal was scored when CBK had a 5 on 3 powerplay on Ryan Bleck and Derek Weaver penalties.

ACE 'super fan' Rebecca B cheered on her ACES all game long and was more than ready to drop the gloves when CBK fans started talking trash. The ACES roared after the game when Rebecca stuck her head in the locker and said "Great job boys!"

The FLYING ACES now head to the AIAHL Federal C Finals for the third season in a row to face WHACK-A-MOLE for the second season in a row. The two teams split games in the regular season. The ACES won the first 3-0 and lost the second 4-5. The FLYING ACES have yet to raise 'the cup' and are 1-3-1 in the finals. Let's hope this is their year.

ACES Advance With O.T. Thriller

There were two minutes left in regulation. It was the first round of the AIAHL Federal C Playoffs. The 'road dog' Shamrocks had a short bench and were clinging to a 2-1 lead. The ACES looked at the clock and wondered if this could really be the anticlimactic ending of a second place, 7-4-1 season.

With 00:01:50 on the clock, the Melick FLYING ACES of Flemington had to start thinking about pulling star goalie, Nick 'The Brick' Minarik, and getting an extra attacker out on the ice. That costly even strength goal the ACES gave up back in the first period haunted them like an evil banshee from some middle earth swamp.

Kevin Smith of the 'Shock and Awe' line had scored a big one in the second to even things up for his ACE squad who had really been controlling the game. But they weren't getting the goals... 00:01:45 left.

It was just two seasons ago that the very SHAMROCK team that now lead by one, knocked the FLYING ACES out of the finals with an extremely controversial game 3 overtime goal... 00:01:30 left.

Early in the third period, the SHAMROCKS had taken advantage of two huge ACE penalty's. No time was wasted. They reclaimed the lead with a power play goal in a 5 on 3 situation... 00:01:15.

With a minute left in regulation play, ACE captain, Darren Jones, gave the sign to pull the goalie. It was a last ditch effort to save their sixth season at Aspen Ice Arena.

Minarik was ready to come off but the ACES couldn't clear the puck. It seemed every attempt was met with a bad bounce or mis-hit that lead the rubber biscuit to the awaiting stick of a hopeful SHAMROCK... 00:00:55.

Finally, with 00:00:40 left, the FLYING ACES gained control of the puck. As they skated it out of their zone, Minarik darted off the ice to be replaced by that 5th attacker.

Their were 38 seconds left in the ACES' season. Ticket sales were down for this contest and the small, home crowd quietly watched as the puck was carried into SHAMROCK ice. With 28 seconds left, 'Shock and Awe' center, Kevin Smith, got hold of the puck and at the 26 second mark, he tied the game. The ACE bench roared to life. And everyone knew this game would be decided in overtime.

And 3 minutes into that overtime, Kyle Turner took what appeared to be an ill advised shot from the right corner of the rink. The SHAM goalie made an easy save, but did not notice Turner coming full speed to collect his rebound. And when he collected it, ACE forward, #16, Kyle Turner, deposited the puck in the net and won the game. Turner received his 4th First Star patch of his ACE career for that OT, playoff game winning goal.

The Aces are back at it tonight at 9:15 at Aspen Ice Arena, battling CBK for the honor of conference champs.

ACES Rest Starters as HITMEN Win Big

The Melick FLYING ACES of Flemington played their final game of the regular season last Sunday night at Aspen Ice Arena. Their opponent... The mighty HITMEN of the all but defunct Iron B league. ACE starters Mike Petersen, Kyle Turner, Bill Marcolini and Derek Weaver did not play.

On the ice the HITMEN were fast, smart and just a little bit dirty. They were too much, scoring 11 goals and dominating on offense. But the ACES battled back hard, scoring 5 goals and winning the second period. Kevin Smith kept up his scoring duties without his 'Shock and Awe' mates. He deposited two into the HITMEN net. Captain Darren Jones also scored twice. 'Juvy' Lou Johnson had the other ACE goal and an assist. Mike Gianetti and Josh Lovering both had a pair of assists. Matt Donahue and Matt Stockwell also had assists.

The lopsided battle with the HITMEN was perhaps a perfect primer for tonight's first round playoff action. The second seeded FLYING ACES should be well rested and ready to go against the seventh seeded SHAMROCKS. The puck drops at 10:30 tonight at Aspen Ice Arena.

ACES Fly Through the SMOKE Guns A-Blazin'

In World War I, German pilots used 'Folker's Synchronizer' to fire their Parabellum 7.92mm machine guns through the arc of the propeller without striking the blades.

In the AIAHL's game of the week Monday night, The FLYING ACES used the 'Shock and Awe hat-trick' to pepper the enemy net without striking the goalie.

The hat-tricks came from Kevin Smith(16,17,18) and Kyle Turner(13,14,15) who each had assists in the late night assault. And that wasn't all from 'Shock and Awe'. Mike Petersen(15) deposited a breakaway goal into the net and tallied two key assists in the hat-trick onslaught. Another SMOKE clearing goal came from defensemen Ryan Warn(2), who also had 2 assists. But the biggest goal of the night came from defensemen Craig Jones. The Jones goal came early in the first period off a 5-hole bound slapshot that found it's way to glory. Jones gave his ACE squad a 1-0 lead and they never looked back. Nick 'The Brick' gave up 4 goals, but don't let that stat fool you. His performance in net was clutch! With so many saves and BIG rebound saves, Minarik(against the very squad he played Canada hockey with) was in First Star Patch contention all night long. In the end however, the threaded shield went to Craig Jones. This was Craig's first ever First Star Patch. When asked about his award, Jones simply said, "Look, it's a huge honor. But right now all my focus is on the next game and the playoffs that follow". The ACES celebrated their 7th win of the season in style. A high quality 'Ace Case' from 'Case King', Matt 'Donny' Donahue. Team Captain, Darren Jones, missed the game due to illness. Bill Marcolini and Matt Stockwell were healthy scratches.

The MELICK FLYING ACES of FLEMINGTON play their final game of the regular season on home ice Sunday night. Their opponent... The HITMEN. Monsters of the B league. Only a couple bleacher tickets are still available for the 9:30 battle. Fans that arrive early will get to see the BOMBER vs REGULAR contest (many ticket packages still available for this one).

MOLES Survive ACES Last Minute Offensive

The FLYING ACES traveled to the Whack-a-Dome for the second time this season. It was a battle for first place against WHACK-A-MOLE. The full powered WHACKS came out angry looking to avenge a shutout loss to the ACES earlier this season. After the first Whack-a Goal, FLYING ACE Mike Petersen attacked and quickly evened the score at 1-1. The Moles whacked back with 3 goals in the second. FLYING ACE, Kevin Smith scored late in the period to bring his ACES within 2. The MOLES started the third with yet another goal, then silences the ACES for the majority of the period. But with one minutes left in the game, ACE 'Black Powder' lineman 'Juvy' Lou Johnson scored 2 goals in under 50 seconds. Assisted by Ryan Bleck and Josh Lovering, Johnson's garbage time goals brought the ACES within 1. But the scorekeeper was slow to the draw after 'Juvy's' second goal, and let precious seconds run off the clock. ACE Captain Darren Jones called for a timeout in an attempt to salvage what little time was left. But with 10.6 seconds in the game the ACES were unable to get the puck into the WHACK-A-MOLE's zone, and lost 5-4. Kyle Turner, Ryan Warn and Mike Petersen also had assists in the contest.

After the game the ACES were greeted with what many considered to be the worst 'Ace Case' in franchise history, surpassing even Mike Gianeeti's infamous 'Ace Case Disgrace'(which Gianetti made up for in a big way the following game. Mike G brought a cornucopia of wide variety'd, ice cold, tasty beverages).
The FLYING ACES are back in action tonight against SMOKE at the Aspen Ice Arena in Flemington, New Jersey. The puck drops at 10:15.

Petersen's Particularly Passionate Patch Performance Powers 'Pilots' Past Pesky Primates (Previously Predators). Plus Tremendously Talented Teammate, 'Turbo' Turner, Tallies Two in the Terrific Triumph.

Thursday night was not only Halloween's eve, it was also time for the AIAHL's game of the week. This weeks match up pitted the MELICK FLYING ACES of FLEMINGTON against the newly named (same old jersey) PRIMATES. A team the FLYING ACES had never defeated in regular season play. The contest took place at the PRIMATES brand new arena known to their fans as 'The Ape'. Ace grind-liner Bill Marcolini was a healthy scratch for the game.
On the ice, the Aces attacked early and often. The Primates net minder did all he could to keep his team in the game. But that high powered 'Shock and Awe' line was just to much. Mike Petersen lead the charge and took First Star honors with his 2 goal 2 assist performance. Line mate Kyle Turner also scored twice with 2 assists (he was up for First Star consideration too) and Kevin Smith had a goal and an assist. The 'Black Powder' line also contributed. Team Captain, Darren Jones, had a goal while 'Juvy' Lou Johnson and Josh Lovering had assists. Defenseman Ryan Bleck had 2 assists of his own. In the third, after a powerplay goal, the PRIMATES began to climb back into the game. Down 5-3, they pulled their goalie and quickly scored to bring the game within one. But in the closing minutes of play, the Aces managed to get the puck away from the extra attacker and score the empty netter to seal the deal at 6-4.
The victory gives the Flying Aces 13 points. this puts them in sole possession of first place in the Federal C League by a single point. In second place with 12 points, hated rival, Whack-a-Mole. With only 3 games left in the regular season, the Aces hit the road tomorrow night(Tuesday, November 4) to face those very Moles at the Whack-a-Dome. Tickets are still available for that contest.

Flying Aces Snap 3 Game Skid And Overcome 'Ace Case Disgrace' On The Back of a Minarik Shutout!

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington turned it around with the return of starting goalie, Nick 'The Brick' Minarik. The October 15 road contest at the Whack-a-Dome was the Aces last game before the bye week. At 0-2-1 in their previous 3 games, the Flying Aces needed a win badly. And who better to get it from then the very team that knocked them out of the sky in last seasons finals. Whack-a-Mole. Ace 'Shock and Awe' line mates Kevin Smith(2G 1A), Kyle Turner(1G) and Mike Petersen(1A) and Ryan Warn(1A) did all the damage on offense while Nick Minarik was quite stubborn in net, letting no puck pass. 'The Brick' earned First Star honors for the first time this season for his 'Rabid Badger' style of play.

Ace Sniper, Mike Gianetti, missed the game due to schedule confusion and It was his turn to bring the 'Ace Case'. This meant no pre or post game beverages for the team. The team captains had a short meeting on possible disciplinary measures, but in the end decided it best to leave it up to the AIAHL Players Union. After all it is one of the most powerful unions in New Jersey.

The Flying Aces are back on the road tonight at 10:30 battling the Primates. A skilled team that has won the AIAHL's 'Worst Name in the League' contest for the past 6 seasons. Here are 3 of the other names they were considering when they realized 'Predators' was not bad enough:
Great Apes, Anthropoids, Old World Monkeys,

BOMBERS Keep ACES Grounded and Sweep Season Series

Days after the Aces were blown out by the B league, juggernaut Hitmen (9 to 3), the Melick Flying Aces of Flemington lost their third game in a row. The C league rival Bombers came in looking to hold on to the A.S. Cup for more than one game and to get out the brooms Sunday night at Aspen Ice Arena. Ace management called up Doug Leonard from the Perkasie Red Barons to fill in for goalie Nick Minarik.
The feisty Bombers scored on one of their first shots on goal and kept on scoring. The Aces answered quickly and often, but could never grab the lead. The Flying Aces seemed to be outplaying their airborne foes, but the Bombers continued to score key goals. With a final tally of 8 to 6 the victorious Bombers made yet another bush league move. They took a team photo on Flying Ace home ice. But the only persons who really seemed offended were this reporter and the short tempered zamboni pilot.
Perhaps the Aces were satisfied with the classy pre-game offering of beer and whiskey by 'non bush league' Bomber Captain, Bill Auld. Or perhaps they just wanted to move on and focus on tonights game against another rival... Whack-A-Mole. Or maybe the new Flying Ace mascot, 'Ace' put the boys in a non confrontational postgame mood. Either way, for the first time in AIAHL history, The Bombers keep the cup for two games in a row.

BOMBERS Take A.S. Cup in Late Night Shootout

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington, with a depleted roster lost the A.S. Cup Battle to a depleted Bomber squad in sudden death, shootout fashion. The game became ugly when a 'Bomber' scored the tying goal midway through the third and screamed "Suck it!" to Ace goaltender Nick 'The Brick' Minarik. The Aces and perhaps the rest of the league were shocked at such bush league play coming from the league commissioner's team. With no goals scored in the short overtime, it was time for a sudden death shootout. The Bombers went first and scored 5-hole on Minarik. Then the Ace shootout equalizer, Ryan Warn, mis-played the puck and didn't get a shot off. The loss was the Flying Aces first of the season. But the fact that it wasn't a regulation loss, was the silver lining of this cloud. The point the Aces got from the contest put them in first place, as Whack-a-Mole lost in regulation.

Aces Shell Shorthanded Shams

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington took down a depleted Shamrock squad Thursday night. It was the Aces fourth win in as many games. The 9-3 victory concluded the Aces two game road trip. On the ice, Ace hot shot Kyle Turner struck hard with a hat trick and an assist. Mike Petersen had 3 assists and a goal. Nick Minarik, 4 for 4 this season, was nasty in net making the Shamrocks work hard for everything they got an letting only two even strength goals in. Kevin Smith had a goal and an assist. Flying Ace Captain Darren Jones had two key assists. Eric Kusznier took the First Star Patch for the first time in his Ace career with the game winning goal. J. Lovering, M. Gianetti and M. Stockwell also had goals. 'Juvy' Lou Johnson had an assist and his first ever visit to the Ace penalty box. The Ace Case was loaded with glorious, exciting, colorful liquids. The Flying Aces head back home to Aspen Ice Arena for an AS Cup battle with the Bombers on Monday night.

I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with the 'Garden State Sport Scene' website. For those that are not, here is the brief post game interview they did with Flying Ace GM Sterling Morrison.

GSSS: Are the Flying Aces going for a perfect season?

Morrison: This is AIAHL, Federal C league hockey. I promise you that is the last thing on our mind. We don't overlook any game. We do want to win them all, but we know the type of talent we are up against. Our schedule is about to get very tough. The Championship Cup is all we care about.

GSSS: With all the free agents available after the Iron B League lockout, do you feel you dropped the ball by not signing any of those players.

Morrison: Absolutely not! Look, we hated losing (Kevin) Brown but that's how it goes. Aside from that, we are very happy with the current roster. And we feel this squad can get us back to the finals.

GSSS: Is there anymore information available on the Ryan Warn, Newark Airport, luggage incident?

Morrison: Are we really still on that? Come on guys. Let's stick to current events. It wasn't drug related, and that's a fact. That's all I have on that one.

GSSS: We keep hearing about this documentary. When will it be viewed and is it true that it is over an hour long?

Morrison: I have nothing at all to do with that. I believe it will be shown after the 100th game or the winning of the Championship Cup. Which ever comes first. I know the last one was held until we won our first playoff game. But I'm really the wrong guy to ask.

CBK Shows Off New Jerseys and New Players at Home Opener... ACES Spoil the Fun!

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington hit the road for their third game of the season last Sunday. It was the first stop of a two game road trip. The 0-2 Come Back Kids greeted the Aces with sharp new jerseys and some very smart off season acquisitions.
Craig Jones and Kyle Turner were both on the healthy scratch list for the Flying Aces.
If you didn't understand the lethal power of the Aces 'Shock and Awe' line, this game was a fine reminder. Instead of reeling from the loss of Ace sniper, Kevin Brown, the Flying Aces simply went retro, putting Smith, Petersen and Warn together again. The three were responsible for 5 goals (3 from Petersen and 2 from Smith) and 2 assists(Warn). CBK, with their usual resilience, were down big. But rallied for their home crowd and tied the game at 3. However the Flying Aces stormed back with 3 unanswered to double up CBK and get the 6-3 win.
Mike Petersen captured his 5th, First Star Patch, on the back of his second hat trick in a row. It should be noted that Nick Minarik was also in the running for 'the patch' after his lights out performance in net. 'The Brick' shut down CBK on several key breakaways and let up only one even strength goal. J. Lovering had the other Ace' goal and E. Kusznier had an assist.
After the game the Aces gathered round the team EuroVan and celebrated 'the changing of the stats'. It was their 68th game and their 34th win. And the Aces know all too well what happens when they hit that 100 game mark. Music was provided by the Animals and then a bit of Steely Dan. At 3-0 the Melick Flying Aces of Flemington are psyched to battle the 1-2 Shamrocks in a late one tonight.

ACES Take Care Of Business At Home

Last Saturday, the Melick Flying Aces of Flemington welcomed the REGULARS to Aspen Ice Arena for the second game of their sixth season. The Aces looked to go 2-0 before a tough road-trip matchup  against 0-1 CBK followed by a visit to Pot O' Gold Arena to battle the rival Shamrocks.
Young Ace Ryan Warn, back from Euro-assignment, was expected to play but ran into trouble with Customs at Newark International Airport. 'Luggage problem' was the only information available from N.I.A. Security. The Ace front office was tight lipped and Flying Ace captain, Darren Jones, would not comment on the matter.  Also on the healthy scratch list was Grind-liner Matt Stockwell. With no info available on his absence either, fans were forced to assume Stockwell's THERMCO modeling contract was the reason, as it was team photo night. ACES FACT #68: Stockwell has never appeared in a Flying Aces team photo.
On the ice, the Regulars were much improved. Offseason acquisitions made up for the loss of several skilled players. X-Aces C. Anderson, K. Breuer and B. Herzhauser put 3 of the Regulars 5 goals in the net. On the other side of the pond it was an Ace explosion as the lamp was lit a record 11 times. First Star Patch honors went to Kyle Turner who scored 4 times and had 2 assists. Not far behind was Mike Petersen with a hat-trick and 2 assists. Then there was Kevin Smith with a goal and 3 assists. Captain Jones joined the party with 2 goals and an assist. And Juvy Lou Johnson had a goal and an assist. Mike Gianetti, Josh Lovering and Eric Kusznier each contributed with 2 assists. And Bill Marcolini had an assist of his own.
The 11-5 win was a good one. But the Aces are going to have to lock down their D and get ready for some angry games on the road. Starting with this Sunday's battle with CBK. The puck drops at 9:45. The Flying Aces will be wearing their road grays.

Aces Welcome Buzzards To The League With Some Federal C Hospitality

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington kicked off their 6th season in the AIAHL Sunday night at the Aspen Ice Arena. At 31-31-3 the Aces were looking to start the season with a big win against a powerhouse franchise. A franchise that in 3 games held the Aces to 1 goal. A franchise that averaged 8 goals a game against the Flying Aces. A franchise that had played in the Iron B League the past 4 seasons. And that franchise is.... The Buzzards.

The Aces came in with memories of a second trip to the AIAHL Finals without the ultimate prize. Swept by the Whack-a-Moles in less than dramatic fashion. Once again the Championship Cup had alluded their grasp. And now it was time to play again. Another chance. A brand new season. With Craig Jones and Eric Kusznier on the healthy scratch list, the Aces called in Kevin Brown (one more time) to add a wee bit of fire power and properly welcome the Buzzards back to Federal C ice.

At the drop of the puck two things were clear. 1- The Buzzards were buzzing with confidence and ready to go. 2- The Flying Aces had nothing to lose... And no intentions of losing. With 3 O-lines and 2 D-lines, the Aces played smart, well balanced hockey. And that's not to say the Buzzards did not. But this is expected from the Buzzards. The Aces looked like they took a big step with their position play. A page had been turned. And when Kevin Smith scored the first goal of the night, anything was possible in this new Aces book(maybe it's time for the season 6 bible, The New Testament).

At the start of the second period, Jim Donnelly, in a power play situation, tied the game for the Buzzards. The goal brought the Aces back to reality. Tied at one, the Buzzards understood this wasn't the same Aces squad they had walked all over in the past. The Winged Scavengers changed their style of play a bit looking to take the lead. But as they did, the Ace defense was as impenetrable as goalie, Nick Minarik, had been in the first period. The Buzzards were unable to attack, as their offensive was denied wave after wave. And then it happened. 2nd season Ace, Kyle Turner, scored. The Aces' were back in the lead. As the second period ended the smell of blood was on the ice.

The start of the third period reminded this reporter of a classic game between America and Russia in the 1980 Olympics. A one goal lead and a lot of time to kill. But the Buzzards, were maybe not fully invested anymore. They looked tired and frustrated by the Aces' play. "C League my ass" one of their skaters cried. It was almost as if they were mad they had to fight for a win. The Flying Aces kept on the attack. Their defense almost flawless. But when the Buzzards did get through on two separate occasions, two key breakaways, skater vs. goalie, 'The Brick' made the stops. And the Ace bench roared! Midway through the third period, 'Grind-liner', Matt 'I'll Kick Your Ass In Court' Stockwell, slammed a rebound home to give the Aces a 3-1 lead. Stockwell's goal earned him his first patch of his Aces career. The Buzzards were compromised. The team imploded giving up to more goals in the closing minutes of the game. One to Mike Petersen and another to Kevin Smith. The Flying Aces were once again above 500. And what a way to start season 6.

The Buzzards will be back looking for revenge in their next season 6 meeting. But for now, the Aces can enjoy this epic home victory. And they can rest up in an early by-week and await the 0-1 Regulars who will be coming in angry off a 2-10 loss.

Kevin Brown will be missed, but always welcomed back to the Aces squad. He contributed with a huge assist. Kyle Turner had 3 assists, Kevin Smith had 2. Mike Petersen and Derik Weaver each had 1.

The Flying Aces welcome The Regulars to Aspen Ice Arena on Saturday, September 6 at 9:30 for a prime time battle. The boys will be skating in their home Teal.

Aces All Business in Final Game Before Playoffs

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington welcomed the Shamrocks to Aspen Ice Arena Thursday night for their final game of the regular season. An Aces win would not only give them the series sweep against the rival Shams, it would also lock down first place in the Federal C South and get them a first round bye in the playoffs. Captain Darren Jones, still out with an undisclosed lower body injury, was once again designated to bench coach. Matt Stockwell and Josh Lovering were both healthy scratches and Eric Kusznier, a game time decision, was cleared for play only moments before the puck was dropped.

Now I've been to many Ace games. All but one in fact. And I have never seen the Flying Aces win in such a 'matter of fact' style. It was clear to this reporter that this game was an important step in the season for the Flying Ace Franchise. But their sights were definitely set on a much bigger picture. And it made it all the sweeter that Thursday's win came over the very team that beat the Aces in last seasons finals.

How do you make a statement in a hockey game? How do you set the tone? Let's think back to round one of last seasons AIAHL Federal C Playoffs. It was Flying Ace, Matt 'Donny' Donahue who blew through the Power Time defense and put the puck in the net 27 seconds into the game. This gave the Aces all the momentum and Donny the fastest goal in 'Ace-tory'. Well in Thursday's game, rookie Ace, Kyle Turner, did much of the same. Only Turner put the puck in the net 14.35 seconds after it was dropped (Fret not Donny, you still have the fastest goal in Playoff 'Ace-tory'). Turner's goal set the tone with quite an offensive statement. From that point on, it was a Flying Ace highlight reel with goals from Smith, Donahue, Petersen and Brown (and Warn, but his was not counted). Kyle Turner also had a nice assist. As did Gianetti, 'Juvy' Lou Johnson, Marcolini and Petersen. Ryan Warn had 2. The Ace defense was in shutdown mode reeking havoc on all Shamrock attacks. And then there was the Flying Ace anchor, Nick 'the Brick' Minarik. Nick took First Star Patch honors for the third time this season, on the back of yet another epic performance. At 8-0-1, 'The Brick' stopped every shot on net except a second period powerplay goal that he was heavily screened on. There was also a 2nd period penalty shot that was swiftly stifled by his seemingly spring loaded right Bauer Supreme One60 pad.

The 5-1 victory was a landmark for the Aces. At 29-29-3 the Flying Aces are a .500 team for the first time in franchise history. They are 11-2-2 in their last 15 games. This season, the Melick Flying Aces of Flemington, swept the Shamrocks, the Regulars and the Federal C North games on schedule. And of coarse, they retained the A.S. Cup.

So bring on the Post Season! The Aces will be back in action at the Aspen Ice Arena on Sunday, July 27th at 9:00 PM as they host a team that has yet to be determined.

Aces Take Down Regulars And Break Teal Curse

It was a hot night at Very Regular Center in Hunterdon New Jersey. And The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington, on their last road game of the season, came in with one goal. Total ice dominance. Captain Darren Jones, still out with an undisclosed lower body injury, was in the well heated locker room early discussing possible line options with Ryan Bleck and Mike Petersen. Black Powder liner, 'Juvy' Lou Johnson, made the call to wear Teal and try to break the season five, 0-1-1 'Teal curse', once and for all. Pre-game action also had the VRC Maintenance crew in the Aces' locker room fixing a set of florescent lights after breaking them in the 'change' process. Several Aces including Nick Minarik, Kevin Smith and Ryan Warn were outside the locker room cooling off when they noticed the Regular's goalie out on the freshly cut ice stretching and ruining a bit of the ice in the process. "That's very bush league" said Smith.

When the puck was dropped, the Flying Aces were all business. Attacking in waves and putting several quality shots on net. The Regulars, much improved from the two teams last meeting, held their ground and battled back crossing into the Aces zone with some chances of their own. But in the end, this was an Ace night. Kevin Smith lead the charge with 2 goals and an assist. 'Shock and Awe' line mate Kyle Turner was rite behind with a goal and 2 assists. 'Juvy' Lou Johnson had a goal. Ryan Warn, Josh Lovering, Kevin Brown and Craig Jones had assists. Nick Minarik let only 2 go past him. The first on a Power-play.

The Aces 4-2 win marked their seventh win of the season. A new franchise record. Kevin Smith took First Star Patch honors for the fourth time in his Ace career, tying him with Mike Petersen. The only Ace with more patches? Nick 'The Brick' Minarik with 5. The Flying Aces come home to Aspen Ice Arena, Thursday night, July 17 for their final game of the regular season. They will be battling the rival Shamrocks. The puck drops at 8:30.

A.S. Cup quotes the writings of Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde and Lemmy Kilmister when it says "Times have changed and times are strange. Here I come, but I ain't the same.

There was Federal C League South hockey action Sunday night at Bombardier Arena in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington came in combat ready to take back the glorious AS Cup. And there was but one thing in their way... The Bomber Hockey Club.

Captain Darren Jones was out with a lower body injury, along with healthy scratches, Kevin Brown, Matt Donahue and Eric Kutsznier. Kyle Turner was cleared for hockey action by team doctors. Mike Petersen, very unhappy with the 11-4 loss to the Bombers earlier in the season, took charge of the vacant Captain spot and came up with lethal tactics in a pre-game chalk talk. Petersen wanted to battle in teal, but let the team know it was their call as he didn't want superstition's to get in the way. The team held a vote to decide which jersey to wear. 5-0 grey vs 0-1-1 teal. Grey took it in a landslide.

The Bombardier Arena was filled with an unusual number of Ace fans, carrying signs and chanting Ace friendly chants to make the boys in grey feel at home. Ace 'super fan' Trey Weaver was spotted juming down the packed bleachers and singing the song of the Aces.
From the drop of the puck it was clear the AS Cup was coming home. Petersen's game plan caught the Bombers completely off guard in the first period. The Aces' play worked well against an attack patern that had helped the Bombers dominate in their last matchup. Kyle Turner took First Star honors with a three goal night. Mike Petersen had 3 assists, serving up 3 beautiful passes to Turner. Mike Gianetti had an epic, backhand, top shelf goal and a timely assist. Josh Lovering had a goal and Derek Weaver an assist. Oh and let's not forget Nick Minarik. He kept the Bombers hearts, heads and pucks out of it all game long.
The 6-1-1 Aces, in first place with the Air Supremacy Cup in hand, travel to the Very Regular Center next Sunday, July 13th at 9:00 PM for a rival revival with The Regulars. The Flying Aces will be looking for the season sweep. Go Aces GO!

Aces Can't Reverse Teal Curse in Shoot Out Loss to CBK

It seems so long ago that the Aces fell to CBK in overtime, shootout fashion. The last time the Flying Aces were in an overtime, shootout situation before that was a June 1st win against the same CBK. Now let's go back to last season when CBK swept the Aces. Or the three seasons before that which were owned by the Aces. It's a true C league rivalry. Both teams trading wins, goals and respect for one another. And it's always a thrilling goalie matchup. But back to the Aces' second loss of the season. Kevin Smith scored a beauty off a pass from 'Shock and Awe' line mate Mike Petersen. Nick Minarik was on his game, allowing only one goal in three periods of play and an overtime. The Aces' D was also in tune. The sudden death shootout loss was fast and painful. CBK took 2 points and the win while the Melick Flying Aces of Flemington had to settle for 1 point. But at 5-1-1 the Aces are still in first and have a chance to take down the only other team to beat them this season. The Bombers Hockey Club. And oh did the Bombers beat them. They scored 11 goals on a sloppy Ace team (that did manage to score four goals of their own) with a backup goalie brought up from the Perkasie Red Barons. The Bombers also took the AS cup from Ace home ice. Well tonight at 7:30, the Flying Aces attack Bombardier Arena, hoping to grab the 'AS' and the 'W'. Captain Darren Jones is out with a lower body injury, along with healthy scratches, Brown, Donahue, Kutsznier and Stockwell. Mike Petersen will be stepping up to fill the Captains spot, setting the lines and running the pre-game chalk-talk. Kyle Turner was cleared to play by team doctors and will be out on the ice making up for lost time. Acting Captain Mike P has called for the Teal jerseys. So the Aces will once again try to get a season 5 win in teal (0-1-1 in Teal and 5-0 in grey). The Ace EuroVan(5-1-2) will be leaving the Ace Pickup Zone at 6:30 PM. Bleck's got 'the case'.

Shams Shocked as Brown Blasts Bomb in the Third After Aces Score 3 Goals Late in the Second

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington traveled to Shamrock Arena to battle for first place in the AIAHL's Federal C South. Kyle Turner was out with an upper body injury. Captain Darren Jones and Craig Jones were both healthy scratches.
Pre-game action found a drunk 'Predator' in the Aces' locker room looking for some trouble with Kevin Smith. Aces' Alternate Captain, Ryan Bleck, politely showed said 'Predator' the door and requested that he leave at his earliest convenience. On the ice though, it was all Shamrock in the first period. The Shams quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

With the second period came another unanswered Shamrock Goal. It was at that point that newlywed goalie, Nick 'The Brick' Minarik, lost his cool and knocked the net off the moorings. As the period wound down, The Shamrocks were sitting pretty and flirting with 1st place. But with under 5 minutes to play in the 2nd, Kevin Smith drove toward the Shams net and did his best to beat the last defender. As he fired on goal, Smith fell to the ice. The puck banked off the goalies left pad and hit Smith's skate. The motion of his slide caused the puck to bounce into the net. It was called a goal. The Shamrock goalie and several Shamrock skaters complained the puck was kicked in. But after a fast call to Toronto, the goal was not overturned. Shortly there after Ryan Bleck sent a crisp backhand pass to Mike Petersen who quickly hit a wide open Kevin Smith. Smith skated toward the net and deposited his second of the night. With under 2 minutes left in the second 'Juvy' Lou Johnson hit 'Black Powder' line mate Josh Lovering with a lovely pass. Josh 'Oh My Gosh' locked on target and tied the game with a lethal blast.

Tied for first place and tied at 3, the third period was sure to excite. The Flying Aces had found their groove and the Shamrocks didn't want to let this one get away. At some point midway through the third, the puck found it's way to young Kevin Brown, who was hovering over the blue line. Brown wound up and slapped the puck stick side, top shelf, past the Sham goalie. The Aces had come back from a 3-0 deficit. And the Shamrocks knew all to well what time it was. Time for Nick 'The Brick' Minarik to close the door. Nick gloved, kicked, blocked and covered everything the Shams threw at him to secure a 4-3 road win that put the Aces in sole possession of first place with a 5-1 record.

First star honors went to Kevin Brown who had the game winner and an assist. It was Brown's first patch of his Aces' career. The Ace EuroVan(5-1-1) was responsible for a goal and 2 assists. And yes, 'K' followed the van all the way to the rink again. Mike Gianetti stepped up and filled the substitute Ace Case.
The Flying Aces are home in Teal, Tuesday, June 24th, as they welcome the Comeback Kids.

Aces Lose AS Cup for the First Time in Bomber Blow Out

The Flying Aces donned the teal jerseys for the first time this season. And maybe the last. It was an ugly game from the start. The Ace' home crowd watched in total disbelief as the AS Cup flew away with the Flying Aces' perfect record. The Bombers came in hungry for the cup, scoring 10 goals to take it. Goalie Doug Leonard of the Perkasie Red Baron's got the call to come up and fill in for Nick 'The Brick' Minarik. Leonard seemed a bit off of his game, but the Aces played sloppy and slow. And they had not the slightestest bit of 'puck luck'. Mike 'The Machine' Petersen had two goals for the Aces. Kevin Smith and Ryan Warn each had one. Assists came from Craig Jones and Josh 'Oh My Gosh' Lovering.

The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington have a ten day break before their next game. Plenty of time to stew over this one. I'm guessing they'll be wearing their greys to that contest.

It should be noted that Ace superfan, Trey Weaver, won the opportunity to sit in the Ace EuroVan(4-1-1) at the pickup point before the game. Trey quickly buckled in and said he was going to the game. And the Randy Morning hit 'Dirty Motorcycle' was played after the loss. This seemed to cheer the team up a bit. This reporter really enjoyed it.

Nick 'The Brick' to Wed His Chick, Once the SMOKE is Cleared

There are few things in life more important than Ice hockey. Some would argue that one of these things is true love. Well, Flying Ace goalie Nick 'The Brick' Minarik has found true love with none other then 'Flying Aces: Season 3 Bible' photographer Megan Davis. The two are set to wed in Ocean City, Maryland this coming weekend. But before the big day, 'The Brick' had three very important tasks at hand.

1. Remain undefeated.
2. Defeat the SMOKE.
3. Go head to head with Aces' season one goalie.

All 3 tasks could be taken care of at the same time on Flying Aces home ice. And so the stage was set at The Aspen Ice Arena in Flemington, NJ. The Melick Flying Aces of Flemington riding a red hot three game winning streak vs the Smoke. The club that stole the back page in the AIAHL off season by signing Ingram to an 'all or nothing' blockbuster 12 game deal. With both teams stacked with talent, it was clear the boys in net would decide this one.

When the Aces scored the first goal of the game midway through period one, the Ace bench roared. Kyle Turner came from behind the net on a wrap around attempt that Ingram seemed to have covered with his right pad. But Ace sticks kept slapping at the pad, as no whistle was heard. Finally Matt 'Donny' Donahue saw the puck and jammed it home. Matt Stockwell claimed assist, but the AIAHL still has that one under review. Now I could go into detail about the poor sportsmanship shown by the dirty Smoke defenseman who rammed his knee into 'Donny's' back during his goal celebration. Or I could give you play by play on how Craig Jones took care of said defenseman. I could break down two wicked goals scored by Mike 'The Machine' Petersen. Or I could give detailed analysis on as many as seventeen jaw dropping saves made by Ingram. But there is no point. For once 'Donny' scored his goal, Nick 'The Brick' Minarik did what he does best. He closed the door. Minarik stopped every shot attempted by the Smoke, for his first career shutout with the Aces franchise. Nick was awarded his record setting, 5th, First Star Patch after the game.

ACES COME BACK ON THE KIDS!

The Comeback Kids, responsible for 2 of the Flying Aces 4 loses last season, welcomed the club to the CBK arena Sunday night. The game was a matchup between two undefeated AIAHL Federal C, South Conference, Squads. Soul possession of 1st place was at stake. The Aces called up off season acquisition, Kyle Turner, from the Perkasie Red Barons to round out their roster for the big game. Pre-game warm-ups alerted the team of poor ice conditions.  Flying Ace captain, Darren Jones said, "This ice is crap. I'm really surprised. There's a lot on the line out on that slush."

As soon as the puck was dropped, it was evident that this game would live up to all of the hype. Here were two powerhouses of the Federal C League. Two teams that came as close as you can to raising the cup, only to fall short. Two teams thinking this is our time, and this is our game.  And those two teams locked horns and began the riveting battle.

The first period was one of good shots and great saves.  Both teams were focused on the first place opportunity. Kyle Turner was asked to remove his Flying Aces, Season 1 throwback in trade for a plain white jersey. 'The Kids' felt his jersey colors were too close to theirs.

After a scoreless first, the Comeback Kids struck twice. First on a one-on-one break, that ended with a nasty deke and a top shelf strike. And second, on a poor Aces line change. With under five minute in the second, the Flying Aces were down 2-0, and hadn't scored a goal on CBK in almost 4 periods of Federal C hockey. Enter Josh 'Oh My Gosh' Lovering. After collecting a smart pass from Turner, Lovering skated right up the middle, wound-up and fired a blast of a slap shot that made the scorekeeper blush. The puck screamed past a CBK goalie, who seems to net mind for every team the Aces face. As the second period ended, the Aces were back in it.

With the third period came penalties, power plays, and plenty of wipeouts, as the price was paid for poor ice. Ace hotshot, Ryan Warn, fell 3 times on the same patch. Midway through the third, The Kids put number 3 in net. Giving them a commanding 2 goal lead. Nick 'The Brick' Minarik slammed his stick in anger. But with 7:21 to play, Ace defenseman, Ryan Bleck, hit Kevin Smith with a beautiful pass. Smith took the rubber biscuit and slammed it home to bring the Flying Aces within one. Then with under a minute left to play, goalie pulled, and everything on the line, Mike 'Don't Suck' Gianetti, passed the puck to Lovering. Josh quickly attacked and tied the game. A composite stick exploded into pieces near the CBK bench. Once again the Aces had come back on 'The Kids'.

There was confusion amongst the teams as the captains discussed shootout lineups. The refs officially informed them that there would be three minutes of 4 on 4 OT hockey, followed by a sudden death shootout if a goal was not scored. The three minute overtime did not see the Aces at their best. It looked at times that they would be settling for the one point that comes with an OT loss. But Nick 'The Brick' up to his usual tricks shut down wave after wave of CBK aggression. In the end the Aces did manage several shots on goal, but this game would be decided by a shootout.

Captain Darren Jones and assistant Captain Ryan Bleck turned to one another and, almost in unison, uttered the same name. Though he had fallen several times on crappy CBK ice, the Aces knew the man to go to in a shootout, was none other then, Ryan Warn. Warn currently leads the Aces in shootout wins.

CBK chose to go first. They sent their best at Minarik, and Minarik did what he does best. Built a 6 by 4 brick wall that kept the puck out in the cold. Now it was time for Warn. Ryan chose a very slow attack. As he glided toward 'The Kids' net, he waited for their goalie to show any sign of commitment. And just as he entered poke-check range, Ryan Warn quickly ended all suspense and gave the Flying Aces their 3rd win of the season on a glove side blast.

1st Star honors went to Josh Lovering for his two goal night. This was his second patch. A new category was created on teamsnap to monitor Warn, and other Aces shootout stats. The Ace van, now at 3-0-1, carried a record 7 passengers to the game, including Juvy Lou, for his maiden voyage and super fan, Rebecca Brendler's second trip in a row. Also on board, with the usual Aces, was Idrissa Sidibe all the way from South Bend, Indiana. And one last thing. Flying Ace Matt 'Donny' Donahue now holds the record for 'most times bringing the ACE CASE'. Way to go Matt.

Aces top Mulligans 2-1 on the back of a beauty by 'The Brick'

The Flying Aces gave a half hearted Mulligan home crowd little to cheer about Sunday night. The Aces came in shorthanded, missing key players Mike Gianetti, Bill Marcolini and Josh Lovering. Unable to run the 'Black Powder' and the 'Grind' line, Captain Darren Jones mixed and matched players for maximum offensive output. With six defensemen, assistant captain Ryan Bleck, aside from the usual defensive lines was able to set up a 'Shock and Awe' D line consisting of Mike Petersen and hot handed Ace newcomer Kevin Brown.

…And so the puck was dropped and the music stopped.
The Flying Aces, in attack formation, crossed the red line into enemy territory. They flew toward what many consider the best net minder in the Federal C League. The Aces peppered him with shots as they searched for signs of weakness. On the other side of the pond, the Mulligans' attack was equally intense. But Minarik stood tall and denied all of their opportunities. Midway through the first, Kevin Smith, who can't seem to figure out teamsnap, figured out the Mulligan goalie. Smith grabbed a pass from 'Juvy' Lou Johnson and buried it, to give the Aces the first goal of the game. Shortly thereafter, Ryan Warn and Smith had an impromptu meeting in the penalty box, giving the Mulligans a huge 5 on 3 power play opportunity. But 'The Brick' and the Aces' D successfully killed it and kept the Mulligans of the board. But with mere seconds left in the first, the Mulligans managed to sneak one by Minarik to tie the game.

The second period was a sloppy one. Both clubs were unable to capitalize on power plays as the game became a bit rougher. But when young Ace, Ryan Warn, hit Kevin Brown with a sharp pass, Brown barrel rolled behind the net and went for a sweet wraparound goal. It went in. Brown had his second goal in as many games. And the Flying Aces regained the lead. Toward the end of the second the Mulligans rushed the net in a two on one situation. The Mulligan crowd roared to life as a shot was blasted toward Minarik. But the silence returned when Nick 'The Brick' opened his glove and gave the captured puck to the ref. The third period saw the Mulligans get some great looks and several shots on goal. But to no avail. And as time ran out, the Mulligan net empty, The Flying Aces were victorious with a 2 and 0 record.

First Star Patch honors went to Nick Minarik for an outstanding performance against a powerhouse team. Minarik's fourth patch tied him up with team leader, Mike Petersen. Critics of the big offseason trade are beginning to see the light on Kevin Brown. And they will get their first look at Kyle Turner next Sunday when the Aces battle CBK.  After the game the Aces migrated to the Aspen Clubhouse to take in some Ranger/Canadian playoff hockey and converse with Dad Minarik. But due to a 'soft' Ace Case and tired rink management, the Aces were forced to take their party on the road. They ended up at Cryans in Annandale. The Jones brothers, Bleck, 'Donny', 'The Brick' and Ace super fan, Rebecca Brendler, watched the Rangers OT win and drank with the locals amongst 'GO ACES' chants and a delicious pizza compliments of Craig Jones. As the amazing night came to an end, Rebecca Brendler's dreams came true. She was asked to step up and drive the Ace Eurovan(2-0-1) safely home.

Aces start season 5 on a high note with 9 goal performance against 'instant rival' The Regulars

The time off gave Melick's Flying Aces of Flemington some space to get over a painful and questionable finals, overtime loss. But the Aces GM was quite busy in the offseason with a fan shocking, landmark, four player trade that sent Brian Herzhauser, Mark Herzhauser, Chris Anderson and Kevin Breuer to the new Federal C League club, The Regulars. In return, the Aces acquired defenseman Kevin Brown, Kyle Turner and two players to be named later. And leave it up to the mighty AIAHL to set the schedule with a season opening battle between the two clubs.

The contest started off a defensive battle with both goalies stopping all attempts. But the Aces quickly let the packed house know that this was their night. With a hat trick from Kevin Smith, 2 goals from 'Juvy' Lou Johnson and goals from Darren Jones, 'Donny' Donahue, Ryan Warn and new Ace, Kevin Brown, the AIAHL South Conference champs took off and did not look back. 'Shock and Awe', 'Black Powder' and the 'Grind Line' each played to their powers. Assist contributions came from Ryan Warn, Mike Petersen, Matt Stockwell, Bill Marcolini, Josh Lovering and 2 from Captain Jones. The Aces D Force played hard and angry hockey. Assists came from Ryan Bleck and Eric Kuszinier. And Nick 'The Brick' Minarik had quite an assortment of tremendous saves including a sweet stop on a penalty shot in the 2nd. It was a powerful C league, season opening statement. The Regulars played well in their first game, lighting the lamp 4 times. Including a late goal from X Ace Mark Herzhauser.

First Star honors went to Flying Ace Captain Darren Jones for his 3 point performance. 'Dream Weaver' Jr, Tray Weaver received the Fan of the Night award for his Flying Ace shirt, poster and game time chant, herd by the entire Ace bench. The Ace EuroVan(1-0-1) was loaded with a record 5 Flying Aces responsible for 4 of the teams 17 points. And finally, Saturday, Flying Ace Bill Marcolini, held true to his promise that an Ace playoff win was the only way he would show his 1 hour Flying Ace documentary WE BEAT WHACK-A-MOLE to the squad. The build up was classic. Aces were not permitted to drink until scoring 3 goals on Marcolini's son, who was suited up and was making some great saves. Bill made the boys burgers, pulled pork and hosted a fine party that went to midnight. Other highlights included a high stakes horse race with winnings going to Josh Lovering and Ryan Bleck handing out his folk LP 'One From Home' to his teammates. There are rumors of the two having a little post game jam session later in the season. Mike Petersen honored his responsibility as a hockey coach and left the party early to run a full house at Aspen Ice Hockey Skills.
Our next game is Sunday, May 25th against cup champs the Shamrock/Muligans. We're going gray boys.

Aces amazing 2 goal comeback in the closing minutes of regulation can't keep Shamrocks from the cup

With under two minutes left in game 3 and down 3-5, the Aces took advantage of two shamrock penalties and pulled goalie Nick Minarik, for a 6 on 3 situation. It wasn't just the 'Shock and Awe' line though. It was the 'turbo charged, Super Shock and Awe line. You had the usual lethal combo of Mike Petersen, Kevin Smith and Ryan Warn. And then, elite defenseman, Derek 'Dream' Weaver, slap shot blaster, Mike Gianetti and Aces' team captain, Darren Jones. And the result was a tie game at the end of regulation. Two amazing goals that I will never forget. And from that point on it was up to the hockey gods. And on that cool night in May, the gods smiled on the Shamrocks.

Thanks to Bill Melick for picking up the tab on our away grays.  On to Season 5

(Article abbreviated due to stalkers from other c league teams)
